They are a more legit punk band to me than the Ramones or the Dead Kennedys. I think certain songs have Raggae strains/feels. I need more women of color…
To be into hardcore, punk, screamo, post-hardcore, etc.
I need them to do it for the music and not for the attractiveness of the boys or girls playing (though I can’t fault you when the guys/girls are so damn hot).
I need people to understand that we shouldn’t still be a minority in any music event, but especially these that I’ve mentioned, where sexism still is as prominent as ever.
I am so tired of the stares I still get at shows. Like I’m never going to be punk or emo or really white enough to be screaming along to the same bands these kids are here for. It’s sad. I used to feel outcast amongst these misfits.
Now I’m empowered.
I want them to know I’m not fucking scared. They’re not going to make me uncomfortable for loving these bands just as much as they ever have.
But I need more girls to be up there with me. To be willing to show that we aren’t afraid.
